Heather started at Wolf Camp when she was 15 years old, attending the Backcountry Leadership training course. She has loved the outdoors her whole life, and has been going camping and backpacking since she was a small child. Heather graduated from Cornell College, majoring in biology. She’s a black belt in Shudokan Karate, which she has been doing since she age six. Heather completed our Double IT Youth Mentoring program in 2016, then our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship in 2017, and became a lead instructor in 2018. She is considered one of the most inspirational camp instructors and natural science educators out there, leading everything from morning workouts to wildlife tracking forays.

Sarah Inskeep, B.A.

Roles/Work: Wildlife Conservation & Herbal Instructor
Hometown(s): Manhattan, KS
Approximate Age: 26
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2015
First Leadership Year: 2016

Sarah was born and raised in Kansas, went to Maine for college, and studied in the Himalayas before coming to the Wolf School of Natural Science, working 24/7 at Wolf Camp and Blue Skye Farm in the summer of 2016 to complete both our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship and Blue Skye Farm Internship simultaneously. She subsequently returned to Kansas State University to finish her undergraduate degree.

Sarah’s expertise with wildlife rehabilitation, knowledge of birds world-wide, and affinity for the wild edible and especially medicinal plants of the west astounded us from the beginning. Sarah taught both kids camps and adult classes in her first summer with us, and for a sense of what Sarah brings to students of all ages, here’s what she wrote in her original application:

“Nature has ever been at the forefront of my mind. Though as a child I was shy with people, I was eternally curious about the plants and animals around me, regardless of shape or size. This biophilia, as Edward O. Wilson called it, grew as I did. The more I learned, the more I loved. The more I loved, the more I wanted to protect these things.

“This desire led me to train and care for rescue dogs, and later to volunteer at a local nature center. Working with and learning from my mentor Vanessa, my perspectives were reshaped. I always sought to help by working with animals directly, but there, I was witness to the pivotal role of education in determining the fate of animals and their world. All too often people fear what they do not understand, and what people fear they will see no need to look after.

“After high school, when studying with Where There Be Dragons in Nepal, I came to an even sharper realization. Just as I saw the beauty of the land mirrored in the open-hearted ways of its people, and found my own heart opening in return, I also saw for the first time the stark reality of human suffering – of exploitation, pollution, and poverty. And I understood my own species is equally in need of love and healing as the animals I cared for.

“Upon these foundational ideas my subsequent education has unfolded. Though somewhat unconventional, my path has not been without aim. From study of politics at College of the Atlantic, to living at a Zen Buddhist monastery, to becoming a full-time student of Aikido, I have been crafting a yet-unnamed degree of my own.

Logan Nelson, B.A.

Roles/Work: Camp Instructor & Videographer
Hometown(s): Rio, Illinois; Bellingham WA
Approximate Age: 28
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2017
First Leadership Year: 2017

Definitely check out loganpatricknelson.com and prepare to be amazed by Logan’s professional work, fresh out of college. We hired Logan just days after he graduated from Greenville College with a B.A. in Digital media to become our camp videographer in 2017, but what especially amazed us was his natural teaching ability. Simultaneous to recording everything that was happening at camp, he completed our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship, and often “saved” even a couple of our experienced teaching staff when groups turned out to be a bit less disciplined than expected. He came out from behind his camera that first summer to become one of the most personable, supportive, humorous and skilled teachers we have ever seen.

Leila “Lily” Lavender, B.S.

Hometown(s): Joshua Tree, CA

Shortly after arriving, she added our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship on top of her Blue Skye Farm Internship responsibilities. Lily also brings previous experience teaching kids Jiujitsu and working at farmers markets over the past few years. She graduated from our apprenticeship in 2019 and was a wonderful camp instructor for the next couple of summers with us while attending Copper Mountain College in Joshua Tree, CA including serving as student body president while working towards her associates in psychology. Lily continued on to earn her bachelor’s in speech therapy in 2025.

Wren Schmid, Lead Instructor

Hometown(s): Seattle, WA
Approximate Age: 23
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2015

As a kid, Wren discovered a love of the outdoors from hiking with her dad. She grew up kayaking in Puget Sound and exploring the woods around her family’s cabin on Anderson Island every summer. She participated in her middle school’s outdoor program for three years on annual camping and backpacking trips, as well as snowshoeing. Wren was born and raised in Seattle, and her favorite places to be are in mountains and old growth forests. Wren graduated from our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship and began instructing camps in 2016. Born into an artistic family, she loves spending her time drawing wildlife. She’s currently attending the Evergreen State College, and her dream is to learn how to live an environmentally sustainable life.

Ella Ashford, B.S., Lead Instructor

Roles/Work: Lead Instructor
Hometown(s): Port Townsend, WA
Approximate Age: 22
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2012
First Leadership Year: 2015

Enough cannot be said about Ella. We’ve said since she completed our Double IT Mentoring Program at age 14 and then our Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship at age 16 that she’s an old soul. Ella has tons of family outdoor experience in Port Townsend, including several sailing trips to/from Hawai’i, she has won scholarships for studying (and teaching) abroad in Europe, she has won top national honors in Robotics competitions, and the list goes on. Her acumen teaching youth and adults is incredible, with excellent group discipline and risk awareness which arises from homeschooling experience with parents who were ocean lifeguards, who encouraged herbal knowledge, wildlife tracking ability, traditional craftwork, and so much more. Ella recently graduated from Willamette University and while there, was a Heather Dempsey Environmental Science Scholar and STEM Fellow.

Dana Miller, Lead Instructor

Roles/Work: Camp Parent & Instructor
Hometown(s): Sitka, AK & Seattle, WA
Approximate Age: 50
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2014
First Leadership Year: 2022

Dana got introduced to Wolf Camp through her daughter in 2014. Her first career was in commercial fishing where she became licensed captain at age 19. During her teens and twenties, she spent her shore time more owned by than owner of an air taxi.  This combination afforded her a lot of experience in Search & Rescue.  At the turn of the millennium, she left self-employment behind her and became a construction site surveyor. To prevent returning to work in construction, she now drives a school bus during the school year, and during the summer of 2022 she became a Wolf Camp instructor.

Kat DiFoxfire Wilson, B.A., Elementary Education

Roles/Work: Camp Parent & Instructor
Hometown(s): Seattle, WA
Approximate Age: 50
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2018
First Leadership Year: 2022

Kat’s philosophy is “Before you can ask someone to protect the environment, you have to first teach them to love it.”  Kat is a Pacific Northwest semi-native (she’s also lived and worked in Japan, Indonesia, New England and the Midwest).  She has been teaching outdoor environmental education (and many other subjects) for both kids and adults for most of her life.  She has worked at Nature’s Classroom in New England, state parks in Missouri, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts on the West Coast, and for various schools and volunteer organizations.  She currently works part-time as a preschool and elementary substitute teacher during the school year.

Kat also loves teaching low ropes challenge courses and teambuilding experiences; outdoors skills such as tracking, herbology, and survival skills; nature conservation, environmental science, and ethics; night hikes; outdoor games; wild cave tours; traditional dance (Irish, Scottish, colonial, contradance); and she even leads online Shakepeare readings 2-3 times per month in her spare time.  Her interests include hiking, camping, gardening, cooking, making homemade jams and preserving food, writing, dancing, theatre, horseback riding, arts & crafts, martial arts, and keeping herself (and others) sharp with puzzles and riddles.  She graduated from Grinnell College in IA in 1993 with an elementary teaching certificate and degrees in American Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies.  She is certified in Wilderness First Aid and Adult/Child CPR. She lives with her spouse, teenage son, several dozen aquatic animals, and six exceptionally neurotic cats.

Bridget Breithaupt, B.S., Lead Instructor

Roles/Work: Lead Instructor
Hometown(s): Orlando, FL & Corvallis, OR
Approximate Age: 24
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2022
First Leadership Year: 2022

Bridget just graduated from Oregon State University with her bachelor’s in Environmental Science, specializing in applied ecology. She has loved learning about Earth sciences since she was a kid attending and later volunteering for her local junior garden club. She also learned about conservation throughout her years of summer camp at Wekiwa Springs State Park in Florida. From there she attended Save the Earth’s Environment through Knowledge, or SEEK, where she realized she wanted to do exactly that for a living. Sharing her love of nature conservation and science with her local community is one of the main reasons that she came to Wolf Camp for the Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship. As someone with a background in subtropical Florida, Wolf Camp provided her an expansive education on the plants and animals of the Pacific Northwest, along with how to handle temperatures below a practically freezing 70 degrees. Bridget continued her education after graduating from college, earning her Wetland Deliniation Certificate while teaching with us in the summer of 2024, and a Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GIS) Certificate from Palmer Scholars later in the fall, setting her up to land a position with the City of Tacoma environmental services division in 2025.

Nathaniel Ashford, Lead Instructor

Roles/Work: Camp Instructor
Hometown(s): Port Townsend, WA
Approximate Age: 20
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2012
First Leadership Year: 2021

Roboticist, sailor, musician, earth skills specialist, fellow hiker and friend… these traits are the foundation of Nathaniel’s vibrant personality. Having grown up in a family of outdoor enthusiasts, and with the Olympic National Park as his backyard, Nathaniel has had plenty of experience with plants and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest. Occupying his free time are overnight hikes through evergreen forests, and journeys along snowy mountain ranges.

His joy for the outdoors brought Nathaniel to us as a camper, in search of the skills that would allow him to become a better conservationist. The community and wealth of knowledge he found led him to continue attending, and growing in his teaching skills, until eventually becoming camp staff. He completed the Double IT Mentoring Program at age 16, the Earth Skills Teaching Apprenticeship at age 17, became a camp instructor at age 18, and lead instructor at age 19. Now you’ll find Nathaniel sharing his love for the wilderness with campers of all ages, bringing creativity and excitement to his teaching methods.

Eva Quezada-Moore, Lead Instructor

Eve spent some of her childhood in New Mexico but most in Chile where she grew up enjoying the country’s beautiful hiking spots along beaches, mountains and many other diverse bioregions. Devon Smith, B.S., Camp Instructor

Roles/Work: Earth Skills Teaching Apprentice 2023 Graduate
Hometown(s): Olympia, WA
Approximate Age: 20
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2015
First Leadership Year: 2022

Devon was introduced to Wolf Camp as a child by a staff member at Wolf Haven, a sanctuary for wolves in Tenino, Washington. She has always loved nature and animals, especially wolves and horses. In her childhood she enjoyed playing imagination games in the woods, and felt a deep connection there.

Devon’s notable experiences include work at psychiatric hospitals as a Mental Health Technician starting in 2022 while getting her A.A. degree from South Puget Sound Community College. She continued that work every academic year as she studied to achieve her B.S. degree in Psychology in winter quarter 2025 from Western Washington University. Devon also volunteered at a Crisis Hotline while in high school and she’s also worked and volunteered at several horse stables, including helping at an equestrian summer camp.

Devon is now pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Counseling, and is an advocate for children who are neurodivergent or struggle in other ways because of her own life experiences. In her spare time, she enjoys taking her friends on adventures to nature spots, going to new places, hiking, long walks and drives, listening to music, and going to punk shows.

Grisha London, Camp Instructor

Roles/Work: Earth Skills Teaching Apprentice 2023 Graduate
Hometown(s): Brooklyn, NY
Approximate Age: 17
Introduced to Wolf Camp: 2016
First Leadership Year: 2022

Grisha has been a proud member of the Wolf Camp every summer since he was nine, and like many of our staff has risen through the ranks from camper into roles like Double IT, Earth Skills Teaching Apprentice and graduating to Assistant Instructor in 2023. Despite growing up in Brooklyn NY (with a short stint in Seattle) he has always been interested in the outdoors, and gets out of the city as much as he can to hike, explore and learn with local friends and family, even if that means backpacking through the snowy winter landscape. He currently attends Hunter College High School in Manhattan, where along with being the president of its sole wilderness club, he’s in charge of the school auditorium tech needs such as drama productions. He runs events, maintains old equipment, purchases new items and delights in training younger students in all of these tasks. This passion for teaching extends back to Wolf Camp, where he is thrilled to embark on his third summer teaching campers about how to coexist with our incredibly special region of the country. In addition to excelling in the outdoors – including choosing the most remote location in the history of Wolf Camp for his solo survival training trek last year – Grisha has a wide variety of interests, including stage managing, poetry and cooking.

She loves camping, especially during the summer when the weather is nice. While camping on clear nights, she loves admiring the stars with those around her.
